Joan Henderson – Recipient of the Kenneth L. Gibbs Award 2017

The Kenneth L. Gibbs Award, was established May 27, 1988, to honor a member publisher for extraordinary personal and professional accomplishment and achievement beyond excellence.

Congratulations to Joan Henderson for this well-deserved honor.

A little more about Joan:
Joan Henderson was named travel information division director for the Texas Dept. of Transportation in March 2016. She previously held the position of Texas Highways publisher. Ms. Henderson came to Texas Highways in 2014 from Oklahoma Today magazine, where she served as publisher for nearly twenty years.

Ms. Henderson is a past president of the International Regional Magazine Association (IRMA) and currently serves on its president’s council. She served for ten years on the board of directors of the Magazine Publishers of America Independent Magazine Advisory Group (MPA-IMAG) and is a past vice-president of the Oklahoma Pro chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Henderson worked as an account executive for Tocquigny Design in Austin in the early 1990s and led an award-winning multi-image photography team in Boston, Massachusetts in the 1980s.

Born in New York and raised in Stillwater, Oklahoma, Henderson graduated from Oklahoma State University with a BA in Humanities. An accomplished photographer, her hand-tinted black and white images have been featured in numerous periodicals and in photographic exhibitions in Oklahoma, Texas, and Massachusetts.

Ms. Henderson was inducted into the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame in 2011.
